Mentimeter Is Not a Traditional Presentation Tool

Let me be clear up front: Mentimeter is an entirely different category from PowerPoint and Keynote. Its core isn’t slide design — it’s audience interaction. You create a presentation, your audience joins via their phones (no app install — just a browser and a code), and they participate in real time: voting, asking questions, answering quizzes. Results appear live on the big screen.

The first time I used Mentimeter with a hundred-person training session, the room felt completely different. Before, it was me talking while people scrolled through their phones. With interactive elements, engagement shot up — because nobody knew if the next question might call on them.

Core Interactive Features

Mentimeter offers over a dozen interaction types: multiple choice, open-ended responses, ratings, rankings, word clouds, Q&A walls, quizzes, and more. Every interaction type is visually polished — the chart rendering is genuinely attractive, not the “default Excel look” you might expect.

Word clouds are my favorite. You ask a question, the audience types keywords, and high-frequency words grow larger on screen in a real-time animated word cloud. The effect is genuinely impressive — watching 80 people’s collective response form and shift on screen is a completely different energy from static slides.

The Q&A wall is also excellent. Audience members can ask questions anonymously (which dramatically increases participation — people who’d never raise their hand will type a question), others can upvote, and the most popular questions automatically rise to the top. No more “any questions?” followed by awkward silence.

AI Features

Mentimeter recently added AI capabilities, primarily around question generation. You input your presentation topic, and the AI auto-generates interactive questions with answer options. This is a genuine time-saver for new users — you don’t need to brainstorm how to structure engagement moments, the AI handles it.

Quality-wise, AI-generated questions are logical and appropriately difficult. But they won’t win creativity awards. For truly deep, nuanced interaction, manual design still beats AI.

Integration and Compatibility

Mentimeter integrates as a plugin into PowerPoint and Google Slides. This means you can embed interactive segments directly into your existing presentation flow — no switching between tools. It’s a smart design choice: preserve PowerPoint’s editing power while layering interaction on top.

Online performance is smooth. Audience connection is fast with minimal latency. Even on a 4G mobile connection, participants join without friction.

Pricing

Mentimeter has a free tier, but it limits you to two interactive questions per presentation and caps audience size. Paid plans start at Basic (~$12/month) and scale to Enterprise. If you present interactively often, Basic is sufficient. Occasional users can get by on the free tier to experience the core features.

Ideal Use Cases

Mentimeter shines for trainers, educators, conference hosts, workshop facilitators, and event organizers — anyone whose presentation benefits from genuine two-way participation. It transforms a monologue into a conversation.

But if you just need to deliver a static report to a passive audience, you don’t need it.

Bottom line: A tool that turns presentations from one-way broadcasts into two-way interactions. Built for presenters who value engagement over just information delivery.
